U.K., Asian visitors up

NZPA Wellington Overseas visitor arrivals increased 2.4 per cent last year to 864,892, the Minister of Tourism, Mr Hunt, said yesterday. Mr Hunt said that while the growth was not marked, visitor numbers from Britain and Asia were continuing to increase. The statistics released yesterday show that beween December, 1987 and December last year, the number of Australian visitors, New Zealand’s biggest market, declined by 28,180 to 266,414, a drop of 9.6 per cent.

The number of visitors from the United States also showed a decline. Between 1987 and 1988 they dropped by 12,829 to 167,525 or 7.1 per cent. The biggest increase was in Japanese visitor numbers. They increased by 17,639 to 93,789, a 23.2 per cent increase. The number of visitors from Britain increased 19.1 per cent with an extra 11,256 visitors bringing the total last year from Britain to 72,704. The second biggest percentage increase was in the number of visitors from West Germany.
