Govt advised to bill bore users

By

OLIVER RIDDELL,

in Wellington The Government is being advised by its officials to collect revenue from the users of geothermal bores in the Taupo area. This advice is contained in a four-page document prepared by the acting chief geothermal inspector, Mr lan Leaver, in September last year. It has been described by the Ministry of Energy as a discussion document which is still being discussed. It looks at cost recovery options and recommends inspection fees on all bores as soon as possible after planned changes to the geothermal legislation

have been made. A fee would be payable annually in advance, and apply to all 400-odd bores in the Taupo area. This recommendation has been described as “outrageous” by Mr Roger McCJuy (Nat., Waikaremoana) in Parliament yesterday. There was nothing to suggest the Taupo geothermal field was affected in any detrimental way by small bore owners as the field constituted only shallow ground waters. He also criticised the recommendation for focusing on non-Maori bore owners without referring to Maori bore owners at nearby fields.
