Embroidery
The Art of the Needle. By Jan Beaney. Century Hutchinson, 1988. 1288 pp. Illustrations. $49.95. Jan Beaney hopes needleworkers will become more adventurous after reading her latest book on embroidery. Readers are guided through the creative process step by step — learning how to find inspiration in patterns, textures and colour schemes, apd then being shown methods of colouring and patterning fabric before transferring a design on to it. There is also a section which introduces a range of modern and traditional embroidery techniques and stitches. Stunning colour photographs illustrate the results that can be achieved with a little perseverance. — Carol Smith.
