Radio diary
Nearly everyone likes stories of the supernatural and the uncanny. A master of such stories was M. R. James, a distinguished scholar and one-time Dean of King’s College at Cambridge, who died in 1936. His fame as a writer of the supernatural lives on. National Radio at 8.3 this evening looks at The Ghosts of M. R. James. Michell Raper presents this 8.8. C. feature and Norman Shelley is James.
If there’s a little Irish in you, listen to Shades of Green, on Plains FM at 8 this evening. Presenting this hour-long programme
of Irish music is Mary Robinson along with Belfast Irishman Artie Robinson. Mary sings and plays Irish music, but Artie is tone deaf — he just loves the music. Paride ed Elena, a five-act music drama by Gluck on a complete recording, can be heard on the Concert Programme at 8 tomorrow evening. Ileana Cotrubas is Helen, Franco Bonisolli is Paris, Sylvia Greenberg is Eros, and Gabriele Fontana is Pallas Athene. Lothar Zagrosek conducts the Arnold Schonberg Chorus, and the ORF Chorus and
orchestra. A rare opportunity to hear early music drama. And, after the Gluck, stay up to listen to Mozart. Frans Bruggen conducts the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century in Symphony No. 40 in G minor (K 550 A nice way to round off an eight-eenth-century evening. Catch the Mozart, at 10.30, even if you miss the Gluck. Put aside time to listen to Renata Tebaldi Sings Puccini, Concert Programme FM 4.5 Sunday afternoon. James Homes
