10 Canty men in national band
Ten of the 32 players named in the National Band of New Zealand to tour China and Japan later this year are members of Christchurch’s Skellerup Woolston Band.
Two other Skellerup Woolston members, Mr Mervyn Waters and Mr Tony Lewis, are the musical director and manager of the touring band.
The national band was selected by Messrs Waters and Lewis and a third person appointed by the Brass Bands Association.
The band will gather on October 13 and its four-week tour will begin with concerts in New Zea-
land, before it travels to China and Japan. The band will then probably participate in the London Lord Mayor’s Parade as part of the launch of New Zealand’s 1990 celebrations by the New Zealand Embassy.
In China the band will play concerts in Christchurch’s sister province, Gansu, and in Auckland’s sister city of Guangzhou. It would also play in Beijing.
Mr Lewis expects a Chinese musical group to make a return visit to New Zealand in 1990.
