More road signs to change

PA Wellington More internationally-accepted road signs will be introduced on March 1, according to the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries. He said yesterday two types of regulatory signs would be introduced — prohibitory and mandatory. Prohibitory signs will have a white background, a wide red

border and, in some cases, a diagonal red bar across a black symbol.

Tbese signs will prohibit a driver taking a particular action, for example “no right turn.”

Mandatory signs will have a blue background with a white border and symbol. They will indicate that a driver must take

a certain action, for example, “turn right”.

The international symbolic sign system relied on sign, shape and colour as well as symbols, to differentiate between the classes of sign. They were also reflectorised so they can be seen at night. Mr Jeffries said the change to international road signs began

in 1987, with different classes of signs being gradually phased in. Temporary warning signs, permanent warning signs and “Give Way” signs have already been introduced. In 1990 parking signs will complete the changeover.

There would be a mixture of old and new style signs until the changeover period ends in 1992, said Mr Jeffries.
