Fire damages tavern

RICHARD CRESSWELL
The Islington Tavern on the Main South Road near Christchurch was ex- ] tensively damaged by fire last evening. Eight appliances attended the blaze at i the tavern, also known as The Swamp, s about 9.30 p.m. The main road was closed for about two hours. 1 The couple leasing the tavern had had dinner at a restaurant and when they i called into a petrol station near Wigram < on the way home the staff asked them if i they knew their hotel was on fire. Neil and Janice Beri and two of their 1 children watched the smoke billowing <
from the building. “I think your bedroom has gone,” Mrs Beri told her daughter. “I saw the fire engines go past the restaurant and just joked about it,” she said. “I have always had a fear of fire.” The Beris had been leasing the tavern for about three months. The fire, which took l l / 2 hours to bring under control, began in a kitchen area on the ground floor and spread to the roof, which had to ripped off. The Fire Service was investigating the blaze and two crews remained at the site overnight.
