Biondi, Flojo win awards
NZPA-AP Portland, Oregon Swimmer Matt Biondi and track star Florence Griffith Joyner, stars at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, were yesterday named the United States Olympic Committee’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. In the closest balloting ever for the annual award, seven-medal winner Biondi garnered 598 points with 15 firstplace votes to slip past the diving double-medal-list, Greg Louganis; with 5H points and 28 firstplace votes. The. figure skating gold medallist, Brian Boitano, was a distant third, with kayaker Greg Barton fourth and sprinter-long jumper Carl Lewis fifth. Griffith Joyner edged swimming star, Janet Evans in the media and U3.0.Q balloting, gaining 581 points and 49 first-place votes to 555 points and 12 first-place votes for Evans. The speedskating gold medallist, Bonnie Blair, was third followed by diver Michele Mitchell and gymnast Phoebe Mills.
