Murdoch dominates with 120

Lesley Murdoch (Riccarton) provided the highlight of the penultimate round of the women’s cricket competiton when she scored 120 not out on Saturday. Riccarton and Sydenham are strongly placed against Lancaster Park and St Albans respectively.

Debbie Ford and Murdoch batted first at Porritt Park against Lancaster Park and gave their side a solid start A second wicket partnership between Katrina Withers and Murdoch realised 88 before Wither’s demise for 40.

Murdoch battled throughout the innings and was in commanding form, punishing any loose deliveries, as she made 120 and the side made 205/4 dec. in 70 overs. Riccarton tightened its grip on the game taking early Lancaster Park wickets. The side was reeling at 25/4 but withjWicki Turner making a

fine 38 it battled through to 99/7, which was a few runs short of the follow-on score.

Nick! Drayton and Karen Gunn, Rlccarton’s mediumpacers were accurate, but it was the off-spinner, Delwyn Brownlee, who deceived the batswomen into false strokes with some well flighted deliveries.

St Albans is also struggling to avoid a follow-on against Sydenham but batted solidly to reach 220/5 in 70 overs. After losing an early wicket, the second wicket partnership between Toni Watts and Maia Lewis added 74 runs. The fourth wicket stand between Andrea Devine and Jenny Turner was also fruitful putting on 78. Turner was in particularly attacking form. Her 55 runs included a .beautifully timed straight drive for 6. In reply, the St Albans players succumbed to fee ac-

curate Sydenham attack with Lewis and Turner taking three wickets each after Katherine Ryan had made the initial breakthrough. Top scorers for St Albans were Kirsty Bond (33) and Sarah Illingworth (22), but the team needs 13 runs to avoid the follow-on with only two wickets in hand. Riccarton v.
