Colombo Cabinet named today

NZPA-Reuter Colombo The Sri Lankan President, Ranasinghe Premadasa, buoyed by his party’s election victory, is expected to name a new Cabinet today to implement his plans to restore peace and ease poverty, a spokesman said yesterday. The ruling United National Party (UNP) took 125 seats in the 225member Parliament in bloody general elections on Wednesday, well short of the two-thirds majority Mr Premadasa said he

needed to bring peace and prosperity to the island. The closest rival of the UNP, which has a 12-seat majority, is the Freedom Party of the former Prime Minister, Sirima Bandaranaike, which won 67 seats. At least 400 people were killed during the campaign, including 40 on voting day. For the first time since anti-Tamil riots in 1983, Parliament will have Tamil members in the Opposition.
