Bashful Lad trying to make amends for last-start failure

Special correspondent Wellington Bashful Lad cost punters a fortune when beaten into third place at Trentham last week-end, but he should atone, when he contests the N.Z. Beefpackers’ Handicap (2000 m on his home track at Woodville at the Woodville-Pahiatua Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow. The Three Legs four-year-old was backed as if unbeatable in the six-horse field at Trentham but after being trapped on the rails, he was unable to secure a run until the race was virtually over. He looked to be full of running and finished only a length from the winner Mountain Ash.

Bashful Lad has looked the makings of a top stayer and had previously run second to Beau De Zure in the Terrace Regency Handicap (2200 m at the Wellington Cup meeting last month. The opposition this time is confined to class two horses and he will have a change of rider with David Walsh taking

over from Phillip Mercer. Toughest for him to beat will probably be the mare Sapele, which scored a fine last-start win in the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes (2000 m at Tauherenikau on February 6. She is putting together a fine record as a stayer and has only twice been out of the money in nine starts at 2000 metres. Mountain Ash won well enough at Trentham last week to be considered again while Kotahi Jim and Lutece also make some appeal. The reappearance of classy mare Candide will be the feature of the Woodville Pharmacy Handicap (1400), second leg of the T.A.B. double. Candide has not raced since failing in the Avondale Cup in December, but is the class horse of the field. She should produce a bold effort fresh. Toughest for her to beat will be Our High Noon, which was just pipped at Trentham last week, Sea Prince and McCallum.
