Rostriever Hanover top chance tomorrow

By

JEFF SCOTT

Although not going brilliantly enough to contest next month’s Inter-Dominions, Rostriever Hanover should still prove a force to be reckoned with on his home territory in the $90,000 Honda Cars 2000 at the New Brighton Harness Racing Club’s meeting tomorrrow evening.

Last season’s star four-year-old will be trying for his second win on end in the 2000 m sprint and is ideally drawn at barrier six.

The Plat du Jour gelding was not suited by a sprint home from the 400 m in his most recent race, at Addington last month, when Laser Lad completed the full 2600 m journey in a slow 3:29.8, but still reeled off his closing 400 m in 27.2 seconds to hold fourth. Rostriever Hanover indicated he had trained on since when successful over 2400 m in 33:5.1 at the Ashburton workouts last week and will more than likely end up the favourite.

Rostriever Hanover will meet tough opposition from the two northern contenders, Paleface Bubble and Elmer Gantry, both of which should be well suited by tomorrow’s Group One feature. Paleface Bubble, lightly raced since joining Peter Wolfenden’s Drury stable earlier this season, has a penchant for Addington, gaining two wins and two seconds in Inter-Dominion competition on the course in 1987. The roomy 1200 m circuit suits the powerful finishing sprint of the rangy Paleface Adios gelding, and a small field of 10 starters should assist the Queensland - owned pacer.

The eight-year-old was unable to run down Rostriever Hanover over 2700 m two nights before the Auckland Cup in late December, and has raced only twice since for a fifth and sixth respectively. Elmer Gantry, last year’s Lion Red Mile winner in a fast 1:56.7, was a

winner two starts back over 2200 m at Alexandra Park and went well again for fifth in Tax Credit’s 1:56.9 mile at the same venue last Saturday, after being

handy in the open. Gina Rosa, Laser Lad and Michele Bromac gave the field further respectability, and all are capable of finishing in the money with runs to suit. Final Offer was an impressive trials winner on Monday and is another trifecta chance. Pat O’Reilly jun, who trains Rostriever Hanover at Ashburton, also has a leading contender for the second of the T.A.B. double, Tyron Scottie, in the Carpet Mill Products Free-For-All Trot.

The sentimental favourite will be Tussle, which is well suited by the 2000 m stand free-for-all, but whether she can notch win No. 39 in what is almost certainly to be her swan-song, remains to be seen. Tyron Scottie, six years her junior, should sharpen appreciably on his two runs at Addington since returning from the Auckland Christmas meeting, while although racing soundly, Tussle’s performance at trials and in her previous outing at Addington on February 3, was dullish compared to her usual high standards.

Yankee Loch, just beaten after leading in the free-for-all trot over 2600 m at Addington on February 3, should be in the firing line throughout again, while Francis Dalrae, his successor on that occasion, is not as well suited from the unruly position in this sprint.
