Book protest deaths
NZPA-ReuterSrinagar, India At least one person was killed when police opened fire on demonstrators as Muslim anger over a book by Salman Rushdie spread to Kashmir. Police opened fire in Srinagar after protesters pelted them with rocks and petrol bombs. Nine people hurt during the clashes were taken to hospital.
In neighbouring Pakistan, five people were killed outside the United States cultural centre in Islamabad on Sunday when police fired on protesters demanding the banning in the United States of Rushdie’s controversial "Satanic Verses.”
