Lifter defends coach
PA Auckland A New Zealand Olympic weightlifter, Kevin Blake, yesterday defended the Australian Institute of Sport coach, Lin Jones, accused of supplying performance enhancing drugs at the institute. Blake, who lifted in the 100 kg division at the Seoul Olympics, has trained at the A.I.S. several times in recent years. “I guess I’ve been over there half a dozen times since 1983 and I can honestly say I have never seen Lin Jones supply drugs or money change hands,” Blake said in Auckland.
“There has been a group at the institute trying to get rid of Jones for some time. It seems to me he is being persecuted. He is Welsh and he originally got the position as weightlifting coach at the institute over an Australian, Les Martin. There have been some at the institute out to get him ever since he was appointed.”
