Ducks to race for wildlife
By RICHARD CRESSWELL Rotaract is planning an unusual race in March which will have a special appeal to duck lovers. The Great New Zealand Duck Race will be held on Sunday, March 12, in centres throughout the country, including Christchurch.
The race has been organised jointly by the Rotaract districts and the World Wildlife Fund. Ms Janice Coldicott, the Rotaract Christchurch representative, said toy ducks would be released into the Avon River at the Bridge of Remembrance, to float down to the finish line at the Armagh Street bridge. People will be able to buy numbered raffle tickets that match the
ducks, which will be numbred.
Those entering should bring their plastic or rubber duck to the Bridge of Remembrace by 1.15 p.m.
The first 20 ducks across the line will win prizes for the ticket holder. Five ducks will be randomly selected and those ticketholders will receive free wildlife fund memberships, she said. A food fair, children’s entertainment and stalls round the Victoria Square amphitheatre are also planned. The event will help save endangered bird species and their habitats. The organisers are seeking sponsors to donate cash or goods to the value of $4OO per duck race.
