Women’s move scorned

Political reporter

The formation by the National Party of a group to attract women to the party has been scorned by the Labour Party. Labour’s women’s coordinator, Ms Jo Fitzpatrick, said it was sad that National had.only just discovered that women had a part to play in the political process.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, had said that he hoped more women would become National Party candidates and subsequently members of Parliament in the next election. As a party that until recently had had a man as its spokesman on women’s affairs, the National Party had a lot of catching up to do, Ms

Fitzpatrick said. The long history of women’s influence in the Labour Party was clear and continuous. It had its second woman president in three years, two women Cabinet Ministers, and one woman as a Minister outside Cabinet, a woman Undersecretary, the Chief Government Whip and 11 women M.P.s.
