Gang clash in store; 8 arrested

A brawl involving gang members in a central city bottle store last evening resulted in eight arrests on charges of rioting and riotous damage. The police sent nine patrol cars to Wilson Neill Wines, Ales and Spirits, on the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Hereford Street, after receiving a report of a brawl at 5.42 p.m. The eight were arrested and were held overnight in police cells to appear this morning in the District Court. One will face an injuring charge after a constable suffered a cut to his head. He was treated and discharged from Christchurch Hospital. A bottle store spokesman said some bottles were smashed during the incident but damage was not substantial.
