Risque advts modified

By

JOHN CALLAN

of NZPA in Sydney The Australian Tourism Commission has agreed to modify two risque radio advertisements due to play in New Zealand next month. The advertisements, which will be broadcast on Auckland FM stations, are part of a campaign to attract more young New Zealand visitors to Australia. But the wording of the advertisements has raised eyebrows on both sides of the Tasman and to prevent any offence, the general manager of the commission, Mr John Rowe, yesterday agreed to change the offending sentences. Mr Rowe said the sAust43s,ooo ($626,300) campaign was put together after extensive research into what

would attract young New Zealanders to Australia. One of the advertisements tells the story of a young insomniac called Michael who unsuccessfully tries a range of cures before. flying to Australia. His insomnia is cured when he meets another sufferer called Anne. The voice-over continues, “And the two have been sleeping together ever since. Australia. The ideal holiday for bad sleepers.” The other advertisement in question features a rather urgent conversation between a young couple at a party with the female commenting on the male’s clothes as he undresses. Finally she rips his boxer shorts from his body as the voice-over says, “Australia. It’s a great place to get dressed.”
