Talented trio preparing for Australian campaigns

Special correspondent Auckland Luxury Liner, Tax Credit and Kylie’s Hero will round off their preparations for ambitious Australian campaigns in the $40,000 Flying Mile at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park tomorrow night. The outstanding trio are booked to fly to Melbourne next Wednesday where they will be readied for the sAust2so,ooo Winfield Cup at Moonee Valley tomorrow week. The connections of Luxury Liner, Tax Credit and Kylie’s Hero reported yesterday that everything was going along well with theircharges. Elmer Gantry struck form with a vengence after nearly a year’s absence at Alexandra Park last Saturday. His last win was in the final of the Lion Red Series at Alexandra Park when he paced a trackrecord 1:56.7 for the mobile mile. He is a proven sprinter and will again pose a big threat to Luxury Liner and Kylie’s Hero even from his wide front-line draw.

Of the others Paleface Bubble and Gypsy Vance are good enough to threaten while the Brian O’Meara speedster, Reba Lord, could upset calcula-. tions. Luxury Liner threw somewhat of a scare into the Purdon camp when he galloped 150 metres out and finished a disappointing sixth at Alexandra Park last Saturday night. But, according to his Clevedon co-trainer, Roy Purdon, Luxury Liner is “100 per cent” right and set to make amends in tomorrow night’s Benson and Hedges Flying Mile at Alexandra Park. Luxury Liner has an ideal draw of No. 2 and had to be a big chance to finish off his preparation for Australia on a winning note. Kylie’s Hero, which beat Elmer Gantry and Luxury Liner over the mile at Cambridge on January 4, is also bound for the 2380-metre Winfield Cup. After that feature, Luxury Liner and Kylie’s Hero will clash again in the Inter-dominion Championships in Perth. They commence with the opening heats at Gloucester Park on March 3. The Pukekohe trainer, Peter Blanchard, said yesterday Kylie’s Hero had thrived since his last race more than a month ago. “I gave him five days off after his last run and when I brought him back in he was as big as a house,” Blanchard said. Blanchard is "99 per cent” sure that Kylie’s Hero had earned a start in the Winfield Cup but added a forward effort in tomorrow night’s feature would clinch a berth. “He would have to go real bad not to earn a start in the Winfield,” Blanchard said. Kylie’s Hero has drawn No. 4 and driver Maurice McKendry should secure a handy position on the outer in tomorrow’s feature. Tax Credit is another bound for Australia. The stablemate of Luxury Liner is a proven miler and with his drawing the ace he could make matters interesting. He may also gain a start in the Winfield Cup if he performs up to expectations.
