Casinos
Sir,—“Casinos are not likely to become golden moneymakers; at best, they should show a modest profit and provide fun for their patrons.” This restrained comment in your editorial (February 3) is sufficient justification for a Christchurch casino. I advocate a casino for Christchurch, not “for my own enjoyment,” not because I see it as a “solution to economic hardships.” I do not want our beautiful . city to be known as “that boring city where there is nothing to do,” or perhaps "the bed-and-breakfastcity,” or even “the one-night-stand city.” If Christchurch is to be upgraded from a tourist gateway to a tourist destination it must have a large variety of tourist attractions. Christchurch must fight to get the South Island casino. It cannot afford to let some tourists and some Cantabrians have their fun and spend their gambling dollars in Dunedin or Queenstown, the other likely casino contenders. —Yours, etc.,
J. K. MOIR. February 5,1989.
