Disabled man abandons crossing

PA Wellington A daring attempt by a quadriplegic, Mr Trevor Cullen, to make a double crossing of Cook Strait in a 3m jet boat was abandoned on Thursday. Mr Cullen crossed the strait to Picton in three hours but choppy seas and fatigue prevented him from completing the double crossing. Lieutenant Neumayer of the Royal New Zealand Navy patrol boat Hawea, which kept a friendly watch over the Cook Strait challenger, said Mr Cullen was tired after the attempt but enjoyed, some hot cups of coffee.

Mr Cullen reached Picton at 12.30 p.m. after setting off from Wellington wharves about 8.30 SL.lii. Mr Cullen, a disabled former navy officer, was winched to safety by the Hawea in April off Port Nicholson Heads when his boat bounced off a rogue wave and flung him into the sea. The Cook Strait attempt was part of a “Wheels on Water” two-year programme of jet boat trips on New Zealand rivers, lakes and straits to demonstrate disabilities need not confine disabled people to their wheel chairs.
