Army’s contingency plan

Political reporter A big rural fire in the South Island could see fire-fighting appliances and 90 servicemen airlifted from the Central North Island to Christchurch at three hours notice. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday released details of the Army’s contingency plans to .assist if urgent action was required to deal with another rural fire. The first line of defence would be about 100 Army and 50 Air Force personnel from Burnham, Christchurch

and Wigram. They would be available at short notice if other fire services had to be supplemented. At three hours notice air-portable firefighting. appliances and another 90 military personnel could move from the Golden Fleece exercise area in the central North Island to Christchurch. This force would be airlifted by Cl 30 aircraft, with extra fire-fighting vehicles sent by inter-island ferry if needed. The one-month Golden Fleece exercise started last week.
