Artefacts may go on display

The director of the Canterbury Museum, Mr Michael Trotter, is hopeful that treasures unearthed during recent excavations at the Kaiapohia Pa can be publicly displayed at the museum. Eighteen volunteers recently spent eight days excavating the gate and trail areas the pa. Finds included a pounaqfu (greenstone) adze, pieces of

greenstone, chisels, stone implements, gum-flints from flintlock muskets and 64 posts, maintly totara, which lined a passage from the Huirapa gateway to the swamp. Mr Trotter said the pieces found were in good condition and he hoped to display some of them at the museum after Ajscussing the matter with members dr the Kaiapohia Pa Trust.
