Emperor’s death

Sir—The atrocities committed by the Japanese Forces in World War 11, under their ruling Emperor, Hirohito, will never be forgotten by those who served. —Yours, etc., RANGI PRYCE, South Pacific Coast Watcher, 1941. January 13, 1989.

Sir,—One of your correspondents (January 11) is most upset about Mr Ross Meurant sending a telegram to the United States

Ambassador concerning the Americans shooting down two Libyan aircraft. I wonder how that person now feels about a Cabinet Minister of the present Government stating that Emperor Hirohito should have been executed as a war criminal after World War 11. Mr Tizard’s views also included gratitude to the United States for dropping bombs on Japan. I am sure Ross Meurant’s telegram has not caused the problems Mr Tizard’s statement has regarding trade and tourism with Japan and New Zealand. — Yours, etc., K. A. ANSTICE. January 13, 1989.

Sir,—l do not condone the behaviour of the late Emperor of Japan in thrusting his country into World War 11. I also believe that everyone is entitled to his own opinion. What I find unforgivable is the behaviour of Mr Tizard in making his private opinions known, without any regard to the possible consequences. Our unfortunate embassy staff are reaping the harvest, while Mr Tizard carries on, unabashed. I feel he is a disgrace to my country and should be forced to apologise, then made to resign. He does not possess the necessary qualities to remain a senior Minister. — Yours, etc., N. D. RANKIN. January 12,1989.

Sir, —Mr Tizard is entitled to his opinion of Emperor Hirohito, but he should realise it is only that — a personal opinion, to be voiced appropriately. Persons assuming public office should accept responsibility for their actions and Mr Tizard’s ill-consid-

ered and waspish comments, apart from being in very bad taste, are having a considerable ripple effect on our cordial relations with the Japanese people. I feel that some sort of official apology from him is called for.— Yours, etc.,

A. F. PICKERING. January 12, 1989.
