Rules for safe cycling

People are now more aware than ever of the danger of our roads. They are there not only for motorists, but for cyclists, and children on their way to and from school are some of the most at risk.

There are some fairly simple rules which, if observed, can help to prevent accidents and minimise the injuries caused

by them. < Firstly, and perhaps more importantly, the bicycle should be in roadworthy condition. It should have brakes on both wheels, reflectors and adequate lights. To make sure, have it safetychecked by a Master Cycle Trader. A safety helmet is essential, and for some schools has become part

of the uniform. Make sure that you buy a helmet approved by the New Zealand or Australian safety standard association. Not every helmet on the market has this approval.

Cyclists should also wear bright clothing, and reflective sashes or belts are a good idea even in daylight.

Cyclists should also be well aware of the road

rules. The start of a new school year brings many children on to the roads who have not had experience of busy streets and intersections before, particularly those starting a new school. Parents should go over the route their children are to take with them, pointing out the danger spots and making sure they know what to do.
