Air and sea captain realises dream
A retired Mount Cook Airlines pilot, Captain John Evans, launched-, his 16m fibreglass yacht, Te Anau, at Kaiapoi yesterday. The Bruce Roberts-designed yacht has taken Captain Evans 9y 2 years to build. For the last two years, since his retirement, it has been a fulltime job. Sailing, along with flying, had been his greatest love, and building the seven-berth ocean-going yacht had been a long-time
dream, he said. Seeing the yacht the right way up for the first time was one of the highlights of the launching for Captain Evans. The yacht was built upside down as part of the construction.
The vessel, which took out a fence-post on its way from Marshland Road to the Kaiapoi wharf, will be rigged and masted in Auckland. It would return to Canterbury and might be used for overseas travel, Captain Evans said.
