Early bottling of fruit urged

With the Canterbury season for most produce being two to three weeks earlier than usual this year, the Fruit Growers’ Federation is warning householders to buy early for bottling. The federation’s Canterbury director, Mr Barney Lloyd, said the traditional stone-fruit bottling season was during the first week in February. This year summer fruit was peaking two to three

weeks earlier, so the best time to buy would be next week, he said. "Many people wil be watching the prices, thinking they can delay it until February when prices plummet. “But that won't be the case this year. Summer fruit is a very perishable line, and people are best to get in when they flush rather than leave it until too late,” Mr Lloyd said.
