Reynolds wins third Zephyr class race

Allen Reynolds signalled his intentions for a claim on the national Zephyr class yachting title when he won the third race in the contest, being sailed from the Pleasant Point club in Christchurch, yesterday. A different skipper has won each race to date, so the contest has been thrown wide open. Reynolds’ win by 26s was a good one, as he led from the first mark, though the runner-up, Sandy Hines, reduced his leading margin considerably during the final beat. It was Hines’ second placing as runner-up. The experienced Ken Maynard produced his best effort to date to finish third.

Matters were complicated yesterday when Bevan Jesson crossed the

line in fourth place but was disqualified for being over the start line too soon. Jesson immediately put in a protest to the race committee, but that will not be heard until today.

Jesson argued that there should have been a general recall as there were several boats over the line at the start, but some restarted of their own accord. Only he and Don le Page were disqualified for being over and not returning. The disqualification affects the over-all placings. Like most other national contests, the worst result is dropped by each competitor to work out the final placings. After three races, with the worst result dropped, Sandy Hines leads by two

penalty points, thanks to two second placings. Richard Ineson, the winner of the second race, is second (eight points) and Jesson third with 8.7. However, if all three are counted, Ineson leads from Beven Stevens (sixth yesterday) and Hines with Jesson pushed back to tenth.

Results from the United Realty World national Zephyr championships:— Race 3: Spartan (Allen Reynolds, Auckland) 1, Zippy (Sandra Hines, Christchurch) 2, Runaway (Ken Maynard, Christchurch) 3. Over all, all races counting: Zippy 6 penalty points, 1; Pilatus (Richard Ineson, Christchurch) 8,2; Wild Child (Bevan Jesson, Christchurch) 8.7, 3.

Over all, worst performance dropped: Pilatus 16, 1; Kahu (Beven Stevens, Christchurch) 21.7, 2; Zippy 22, 3. Results subject to protest.
