McKees on for repeat
Special correspondent ~ . „ „ A Auckland The McKee stable of Takanini, which took such a notable quinella last Saturday, has the chance for another at Avondale tonight.
On Saturday Trevor and Stephen McKee provided first and second, Sparkling Spi and Glenford, in the $lOO,OOO Waikato Stud Stakes. This time, in the Carlyle, they have Baronet, an almost certain favourite, and another very good prospect, Star Tempo. A colt by Natural from Nishika, Baronet showed instant speed when winning a couple of barrier trials. In his totalisator races he managed a third, second and a fifth before his first win, all the way, at Ellerslie on December 7. Quite remarkably and by a due turn of luck the McKees might claim, their three acceptors for the Carlyle drew Nos 1,2 and 3 at the barrier. In the absence of Lord Roman, Baronet will go away against the rail and Star Tempo the next one out. The form that Miss Prospect showed at Ellerslie during the holidays suggests she will be hardest to beat in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Waterview Improvers. One of Frank Ritchie’s team, at Takanini, Miss Prospect finished third on Auckland’s fourth day, behind Beau Bayou over 2000 m. She was a winner the time before, over 1600 m at Avondale, altogether she has been thoroughly consistent. Flint Seal, a third placegetter in class three last time he raced, at Te Rapa on January 10, and Italian Affair and Crossword look the best prospects for the second leg, the Challenge 1400. Jetbet: 2
