Aust, bull run comes to halt

NZPA-AAP Sydney The bull run on the Australian share market came to a halt as negative sentiment on weaker metal and futures prices prevailed. Brokers said the gloomy combination of Wednesday’s current account figures for December, United States trade figures on Thursday and thin volumes in most sectors put a lid on the market.

It was further hampered by the absence of overseas influence with the Tokyo market and Wall Street being closed today for public holidays, they said. By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was down 5.8 points to 1512.2. "It’s not as though the sky is full of clouds — but there are certainly some gathered over us at the moment,” one broker said. “Hopefully, this is just a momentary break in the bull run.”

The all industrials fell 13.2 to 2520.2, the all resources 0.7 to 758.0 and the gold marker 0.4 to 1461.5. National turnover was light with only 62.55 million shares worth sAustll2.BsM changing hands. Declines were slightly ahead of rises.

The leading industrial stocks had a mostly poor trading day with News Corp down 20c to 1035, Arnotts down 18c to 600, Lend Lease Corp down 10c to 1075 and BTR Nylex down 6c to 900. BHP dropped 6c to 738, TNT 8c to 370 and Fletcher Challenge 6c to 350, and Pioneer International 5c to 260 despite news of its fourth company acquisition, Fletcher Granite, in the United States in the last year. Elders IXL slipped 2c to 286 as 2.78 M shares were traded, a large number of them in overseas transactions.

The insurance sector was quiet with FAI down 2c to 233 and QBE steady at 504. Banking stocks also fared badly as ANZ lost 2c to 540, National Australia 6c to 644 and Westpac 6c to 544. Mining stocks had mixed fortunes. Western Mining lost 12c to 502 and Broken Hill Metals 10c to 150 while Cudgen RZ jumped 30c to 850, CRA gained 4c to 832, MIM 4c to 177, Bell Resources 5c to 145 and North Broken Hill 2c to 257.

Australmin Holdings lost 1c to 15c as 5.48 M shares changed hands. In the energy sector, Santos improved 4 c to 354 as 2.95 M shares were traded. Ampol Exploration was up 2c to 180. Closing quotes Last Industrial Buy Sell sale ANI 173 179 177
