Salmon

Sir, — The suggestion of the general manager of Sandford’s Fishing Company that there be a ban on angling for salmon would be food for thought if anglers were threatening the resource but, in fact, the reverse applies. In 1988 alone the N.Z. Salmon Anglers’ Association contributed to the recreational salmon fishery by being party to the release of 15,000 salmon smolt into Canterbury rivers, incubating 50,000 salmon eggs for release into the Hurunui River, releasing 32,000 smolt into Otago Harbour and rivers, carrying out spawning stream improvements, and being instrumental in halting some commercial fishers from depleting salmon stocks at sea. All of this was carried out by anglers for anglers, which is a considerable achievement for an organisation which is funded solely by subscriptions and donations. Mr Barratt (December 22) should pay his $l2 subscription fee to be part of an organisation which is proud of its conservation ethics and its substantive ongoing contributions to the recreational salmon fishery, thus helping avoid more restrictions than exist now for licence holders. — Yours, etc., LINDSAY DELL, President. December 23, 1988.
