NZPA-AAP SydneyAustralian stocks finished almost steady yesterday after mixed news from overseas. At the end of floor trading, the all ordinaries index had eased 0.9 points to 1485.5. "The lead from overseas markets was dull,” a broker said. “Precious metals were down so one counteracted the other.” Volume was encouraging due to option related transactions, brokers said. Option expiries in Western Mining and CRA, and Westpac going ex-dividend today, stimulated trade in these stocks. The industrial index rose 2.4 points to 2474.4. The all resources fell 3.1 to 745.8 and the gold index 3.4 to 1471.8. About 58.48 million shares worth sAustl6l.ssM were traded nationally as rises outdid falls by about four to three. Nearly halt the volume dealt was bank stock. Westpac rose 6c to 560 as 9.56 M shares were dealt, ANZ rose 4c to 548 while National Australia shed 4c to 622. Some mining stocks were heavily traded because their options expire today. Western Mining lost 9c to 493 as 335 M shares were traded. CRA gained 2c to 784. Other metal stocks were mixed. Cudgen rose 28c to 780 while Renison fell 10c to 630. Among the leading industrials, 4c losses took ANI to 164, Boral to 360, and Mayne Nickless to 574 while News Corp gained 6c to 976 and Pioneer Concrete 5c to 245. Among the gold stocks, Niugini fell 15 to 265, Metana 5c to 485 while Pan Australian gained 10c to 380. Of the oils, Hartogen fell 5c to 120 and Ampol Exploration 3c to 180.
