Antarctic centre appointment
Mr Ray Davy, of Farrell Management Company, Ltd, Christchurch, has been appointed project manager for the planned International Antarctic Centre at Christchurch Airport. He will oversee the production of a detailed design report, working drawings and contract documents for the centre. Mr Davy will also be responsible for ensuring the construction phase of the project runs smoothly and that the first stage of the centre is built on time and within budget.
His appointment is the latest step in the Christchurch International Airport Company’s project to establish an international Antarctic gateway centre in the city. The company’s chief executive, Mr George Bellew, visited Antarctica this month as a guest of the Antarctic Division, D.S.I.R. Both the Antarctic Division and the United States National Science Foundation have signed letters of intent to be major participants in the Antarctic Centre.
Briefings on the centre’s proposed features have also been given to representatives of the Swedish, German, French, Italian and Soviet Antarctic research programmes. In addition, all 38 Antarctic Treaty nations have been informed of the Antarctic Centre Project, with particular emphasis on the nations with research interests in the Ross Sea area. The airport company hopes to begin construction of the first phase of the Antarctic Centre late next year.
A Christchurch girl, Paula Williams, aged 14 (centre), has won the Junior Miss Caroline Bay contest. Second was Candy Robinson, aged 14, of Temuka (right), while Belinda Gliddon, aged 14, of Taupo, was placed third.
The contest is part of the Caroline Bay Carnival, which runs from December 26 to January 7.
One of the highlights of the carnival programme is always the daily concerts, and among the guest performers are Toni Williams, Patsy Riggir and an Australian entertainer, Johnny Devlin.
