Two opt for ‘new start’ grant

PA Oamaru Two North Otago farmers have opted to take the Government’s $45,000 “new start” grant and leave their farms, a Rural Trust co-ordinator, Keith Gawn, says. Another 15 applications are being processed. The “new start” grant is part of the drought package announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, in November. It is payable after the farm has been sold and a deed of agreement reached with creditors not to pursue payments from it.

Mr Gawn said he was not surprised by the number of farmers applying for the grant to leave their farms.

He expected further applications next month, particularly when farmers looked at replacing stock sold off or slaughtered because of the drought.
