Ragamuffin certainty for line honours
NZPA-Reuter Melbourne Ragamuffin increased its lead over Great News by eight nautical miles yesterday and looks certain to take line honours in the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race. Great News, skippered by the Olympic gold medallist, David Forbes, is almost guaranteed to take the handicap title with a clear lead from Southern Cross, a 40-footer which was launched only a week before Christmas. Ragamuffin continued its slow sail, averaging six knots down the east Tasmanian coast in a light south-
easterly and drawing 58 miles ahead of Great News. Its skipper, Syd Fischer, is now only 95 miles from Hobart and his first victory in the race in 19 attempts. Ragamuffin is expected to finish late this morning. Ragamuffin, then called Bumblebee IV, took line honours in the Sydney-to-Hobart in 1979. Last year, as Gazebo, it finished second behind Sovereign and third on corrected time. Thirty-seven yachts have withdrawn from the starting fleet of 119. The majority suffered rig problems,
