Stars’ encounter Winton highlight

Special correspondent Invercargill The star pacers Seaman and Glenburn Star look set for a good battle when they race in the Winton Cup at the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. Seaman has been ultra-consistent this season, and Glenburn Star has emerged as the south’s boom pacer with five wins from six starts. Seaman served notice of his readiness for this test with a slashing third in the Gore Cup last Monday. He paced better than 40.8 (post-to-post) on that occasion. He may be even better suited on the roomier Winton track tomorrow. Seaman appreciated the big track when he won at the Wairio meeting last month. Seaman is a year older than Glenburn Star, but has to concede Allan Devery and Henry Skinner’s star 10 metres. That may prove a tough task, as Glenburn Star has done everything asked of him this season. He has only missed once in six starts, and through little fault of his own.

Futher more he seems equally as well suited in front as from behind. In the main he has compiled his winning streak against those of his age and while the older and tougher handicap horses will provide sterner rivalry, he should measure up. Debbie’s Boy, last term’s fine three-year-old, recaptured that sparkle with a polished win against the four-year-olds at Gore last Monday. The well-bred Double Century is obviously right back to his best and ready to comfirm his big reputation. Bafayana, a brilliant winner against C2 opposition at Gore last Monday, appeals most of the others. She will make matters interesting from her handy draw if the pace is slack over the first mile. Flaming Chip, which outstayed her Gore rivals in 4:11.83 for 3200 metres, steps back to a mile in the second leg, the Pyne, Gould, Guinness Stakes. She has struck a purple patch of form and deserves to be favourite.
