Tourist guides go out today

Nearly 40,000 Canterbury Promotion Council tourist guides are being distributed today to meet the needs of the big visitor numbers expected next year. There would be 39,000 copies of the January edition of the guide, said the council’s chief executive, Mr Bruce Dunstan. That was the biggest run of the guide, he said. Canterbury was moving into the peak holiday season and “huge” visitor numbers were expected. December had been a busy month for tourist attractions in Christchurch and throughout Canterbury. With only three days of December left, the council’s information office on Oxford Terrace had helped almost 14,000 during the month. Tuesday was the busiest day during December, when more than 650 people sought information, Mr Dunstan said. Throughout 1988 the council estimated that more than 145,000 visitors used the office.
