Sprouts off Australia’s menu

NZPA Sydney Brussels sprouts is the vegetable most detested by Australians, according to a poll in the Melbourne “Age” newspaper. Running a close second was spinach, the poll on Australia’s changing eating habits said. Australians of all ages were finicky about their greens, but most

difficult to please were 18 to 24-year-olds with 80 per cent finding at least one vegetable objectionable. Tolerance rose among 25 to 54-year-olds, and among those aged 55 and over nearly half said there was no vegetable they disliked. Consistent with that pattern, the core of aversion towards brussels sprouts was found among people

under 40, the poll said. Twelve per cent in this age group were anti-brussels sprouts, but only four per cent of those aged 55 and over felt the same way. Consistent with international trends, the poll found Australians were eating less red meat and dairy products, and more vegetables, fruit and white meat.
