Mr Evelyn Woods and Mrs Nellie Woods (above), have been regular campers at Woodend Beach for 45 years. Mr Woods, aged 78, and Mrs Woods, aged 76, of Christchurch, who have been married 53 years, have spent three months

of most of their married life each year at Woodend during the summer. Mr and Mrs Woods said they liked camping at Woodend because of the “simple, peaceful” lifestyle that was a haven from the bustle of the city.

They said they were lucky they did not arrive at the camp as usual in October, because their old site was burnt by the tire that swept through the scrub and plantation at Woodend. A daughter’s wedding in Octo-

ber had prevented them from camping at their usual time. Mr and Mrs Woods have six children, 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, many of whom spend some time with them during their beach holi day.
