Canterbury members of the team are Arnya Cosgrove, swimming; Kim Robinson and Frank Watson, athletics; Gillian Ramsay and Murray Kirk, badminton; Polly Fechney and John Lavell, table tennis; Nadia Baradi, Nicky Morrison, Martin Abela, Malcolm Clausen, Tony McGill and Paul Scott, basketball; Charee Arnold, Pollyanna Ferguson, Denise Godman, Victoria Green, Lynette Swan, Karim Baradi, Peter Berry, Eric Coppage and John Kinaston, volleyball; Patrick Bothwell, Wayne Hargood, Craig Haworth and Danual Upton, football. The New Zealand team is being sponsored by National Provident who has provided $25,000 towards the team’s expenses. New Zealand will be the first country in the Southern Hemisphere to host the Games which start on January 7 and run for 10 days. About 1300 deaf athletes from 30 other countries will be competing. This is well up on the last games when 22 countries competed in Los Angeles in 1985. The Games are the only sporting event to be directly affiliated to the Olympic Games.
