Stone bruise keeping Na Botto at home today

Special correspondent Auckland The senior co-trainer of Na Botto, Peter Hollinshead, is “very hopeful” of the gelding being fit next Monday, even though he is unable to run at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie today. So impressive in a between-races gallop on his home track at Te Awamutu last Saturday, Na Botto was found, the next day, to have developed a stone bruise. The injury, to his off-front foot, is nothing more than that, as an x-ray has shown, but it has been causing some soreness. Hollinshead took Na Botto to Waihi Beach yesterdy and will work him there in the surf. So provided the soreness disappears the horse should be fit for the D.B. Auckland Cup. Na Botto was a guaranteed favourite for the Nathans Memorial today, with a Melbourne Cup third placing and laststart middle-distance win at Pukekohe to his credit. And a further win in the Nathans would have made just as certain his being one of the best-backed D.B. Auckland Cup runners on Monday. The withdrawal of Na Botto reduced the field for the Nathans Memorial to just eight horses of which several are well below the best class or out of form. Shannon Lad has only to be near his best to win, even though required to give away weight all round. He finished second in this race last year and then Jetbet: 2 Race 1 11.55 FIRST AKARANA MAIDEN $10,000; 1400 m 1 9302 Arree Ore 5 D. Healey 55.0 2 2002 Forlorn Abbey 1 .... L. ran a fine third in the Auckland Cup. With a brace of middle-distance wins, at Rotorua then Te Rapa, then a third placing in the New Zealand Cup, Shannon Lad had an excellent early summer. A failure next time, at Pukekohe, could have been excused because of the wet track but there seemed no explanation for his running so poorly when well backed in the D.B. Avondale Cup. This will be Shannon Lad’s chance to reinstate himself as one of the best distance runners, and get back into Auckland Cup reckoning. A further race in the Barclay Fillies Series — the Allegra Park Classic — and return to racing of the brilliant Takanini three-year-old, Greenback, will be today’s big attractions, The 1300-metre Rakino Plate, a class three for three-year-olds, will be Greenback’s first race since he injured himself when racing in Sydney last autumn. Before going to Sydney Greenback looked a young galloper out of the ordinary and the way he has been going in training lately suggests he has lost none of his great ability. Phillipa Rush ran away with the first of the four races of the Barclay Series, the Eagle Technology at Pukekohe. That earned her 15 points in the competition and it will be surprising if she does not gather a further 17 with another win this afternoon. Phillipa Rush is due to race against her nine filly opponents, eight of them maidens, at level weights. Her exceptional speed is her big asset and she looks next to unbeatable.
