Desert Orchid joins elite group

NZPA-Reuter London Desert Orchid became only the seventh horse to win the King George VI Steeplechase more than once when he romped home at Kempton Park on Monday. Desert Orchid, a 2-1 on favourite, repeated his 1986 victory over the 4.Bkm distance but not before giving his supporters some worrying moments. Simon Sherwood predictably took Desert Orchid to the front early on but was never able to take a clear lead. On the final circuit, Vodkatini briefly fought his way to the front with both Kildimo and Charter Party looking dangerous. But Desert Orchid had plenty in reserve and he

pulled away to beat Kildimo and Vodkatini by four and five lengths respectively. “Although the other two were ranging alongside there was never any danger of them beating us and I was never concerned,” Sherwood said. “He is a truly great horse.” Owner, Richard Burridge, said Desert Orchid would now run in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot on January 14 but added he would make no decision on whether or not to enter for the Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 16 until mid-Feb-ruary.
