Victoria Square

Sir,—The Christchurch City Council is to be congratulated on its decision to leave Victoria Square as a green, open space, free of all buildings. It can now become an oasis in the midst of a busy city; a peaceful place for citizens and visitors to relax. There remains one more matter to be considered. Queen Victoria is magnificent in her present commanding position, surrounded by lovely flower beds. Why spend a considerable amount of ratepayers’ money to move her when she looks so right where she is?—Yours, etc.,

M. M. GREGOR, December 20, 1988.

Sir, —Mrs Ann Lewis (December 20) appears to have little sense of occasion. For many years Queen Victoria’s statue presided undisturbed over the piecart; her promotion to a more central position in Victoria Square, where she becomes “a means of focusing attention on the Parkroyal Hotel,” might be regarded by some as an advance in status. This supposition of course could be open to debate. — Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. December 20, 1988.
