Pigmeat threat angers Moore

The Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, is disappointed that potentially lucrative exports of South Island pigmeat to Australia have been jeopardised by “plainly irresponsible behaviour.”

The trade is threatened by an outbreak of the pig disease, Aujeszky’s, which has been found in a herd of kune kune pigs in Alexandra. The Ministry of Agriculture believes the outbreak was caused by North Island pigs smuggled to the South Island.

It was only last month that Mr Moore announced Australia had agreed to accept pigmeat from the South Island because of the absence of the disease south of Cook Strait. “Government officials and Ministers sweated for years to get South Island pigmeat to Australia, only to have the trade jeopardised by plainly irresponsible behaviour,” he said.

Mr Moore said New Zealand had suspended shipments of South Island pigmeat across the Tasman until further tests were made on the suspect pigs. Final results of these tests are not expected until January 4.
