Nurses vote to strike for pay

Nurses in nine private hospitals in Christchurch have voted to take strike action over a breakdown in their award talks. The field officer for the Canterbury branch of the Nurses’ Union, Ms Chris Wilson, said that in all the hospitals where stopwork meetings had been held nurses had voted to take

strike action. “The nurses are well aware of the growth in their industry and are not prepared to prop up employers’ profits any longer by working for low wages and poor conditions,” she said.

Further stopwork meetings would be held in the new year, said Ms Wilson.
