Guess has Awapuni record to maintain

Special correspondent Wellington

The Takanini galloper, Guess, will be attempting to maintain a notable record at Awapuni when he contests the $20,000 Evening Standard Christmas Handicap (2100 m at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow. The well-travelled seven-year-old has recorded three wins at the last two Manawatu Christmas carnivals, as well as having won the Marton Cup two years ago. He has raced on all three days of the Manawatu carnival the past two years and he is likely to do so again. Tomorrow’s race will act as a final trial for Guess as well as five others for Monday’s Manawatu Cup. Guess appears to be well placed to take the honours in tomorrow’s event after returning a sound effort for fourth on the first day of the meeting, finishing just under two lengths from the winner Gallipoli.

Noel Harris, who has won two races on Guess previously, has elected to stay with him.

The Marton galloper, McAdam, could be the toughest for Guess to beat. He returned an excellent effort for third in the Tenderkist Cup at Wanganui two starts ago and then didn’t have much luck when sixth at Otaki last start.

Sage is a talented mare which should be given another chance, despite her last start failure at Otaki. She covered a fair bit of extra ground in that race. The double will be completed on the John Henderson Sprint (1400 m in which the very promising Trissaring is likely to start a warm favourite. She has compiled a magnificent record and ran a track record when winning over 1200 metres at Te Rapa on December 6. She is probably better placed over 1400 metres and with David Walsh in the saddle, she looks an outstanding prospect.
