No ‘instant’ cure
No instant cures were likely for the problems of the meat industry, although the long term outlook was improving, believes the chairman of the Meat Industry Association, Sir David
Beattie. The industry was working at every level to generate improved returns, said Sir David, reviewing his first year as chairman. Although at various
times various participants in the industry had been side-tracked into peripheral subjects and point scoring, there was a growing realisation that a united front was needed to tackle the real
issues. These issues were costs, marketing and trade access. “Producers, processors and exporters must all receive better returns if contraction of the industry is to be halted.
