Northern Ireland
Sir, —Your cable brief, “LR.A. attack” (December 16) again presents a one-sided view of the Irish “troubles.” Based on media reports, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Irish Republican Army is the only terrorist group operating within Northern Ireland. This misconception is reinforced by New Zealand’s media, and is sadly incorrect. Since the beginning of this year 19 people have been killed by loyalist groups, and 83 people wounded. These loyalist groups include the Ulster Defence Association (U.D.A.), Ulster Volunteer Force (U.V.F.), Ulster Freedom Fighters (U.F.F.), and the Protestant Action Force (P.A.F.). Both the U.D.A. and U.F.F. have stated that “ordinary Catholics have nothing to fear,” but have failed to give their definition of “ordinary.” While I
do not support the use of violence by either side, I believe it is unfair to report acts of terrorism committed only by the LR.A. — Yours, etc.,
AARON O’BRIEN. December 18, 1988.
