Use of rates money queried

PA Wellington A Wellington city councillor, Rex Nicholls, has called in the Controller and Auditor-General on what he says is a council plan to illegally use ratepayers’ money to fight transport deregulation.

The council voted last week to oppose Government proposals to deregulate the transport industry and fund a co-ordinator to advise the council on the proposals. The co-ordina-tor will work full-time for six months and be paid $17,000.

Cr Nicholls opposed the recommendation. He said yesterday he had written to the Auditor-General because he thought it was irresponsible and legally wrong to spend ratepayers’ money to fight Government policy.
