‘Divided London’ denounced
NZPA-Reuter London
London’s police chief has denounced what he called the division of the capital into “two Londons” — one prosperous and safe, the other poor and crime-ridden.
“Despite the apparent prosperity of London, the city contains within it the 10 poorest boroughs in England and Wales,” the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Peter Imbert, said in an article published in the “Evening Standard” newspaper. “The very proximity of these two Londons heightens the despair of those who live in the disadvantaged parts of the city,” he said.
Sir Peter, whose article appeared a day after the Home Office announced a 13 per cent rise in violent crime in the year to September, said the police were tackling the problem by deploying more officers and looking at safer ways of designing inner-city estates.
